Shopping for wine online seems like an easy task, you find the wine you like, find the best price for it, and buy. Seems easy enough, until you get to checkout and you realize shipping is an extra $25 to $40.
I started doing more research into the “best priced” wines from online retailers and discovered that the places that have the lowest prices tend to charge the most for shipping. So you think your only paying $7.99 per bottle for that Chardonnay but after you add up shipping charges you’re up to $10.99 or even more more.Photo credit: Daniele Zanni / Foter / CC BY-NC-SA
Let’s face it, simple economics would show that these places are here to make money, they are not selling wine for the fun of it. They have to get a certain price for the wine, they lure you in with a cheap price and then get you on the back-end with high shipping charges.Photo credit: Bill Selak / Foter / CC BY-ND
I find the best places to buy from offer a fair price, and free shipping. You know exactly what you’re paying at the time you add your order to the cart and that’s that. No guessing what the shipping charges are, no hidden fees. I also like to find a place that will offer some personalized service, a place I can call and ask questions about the wine, send an email about what I’m eating and have them pick a great wine to pair with it.

Do your homework and find a great online retailer, they are out there. The bottom line, if they are not up front about shipping costs it will end up costing more. Be wary of the ones with the “best price”. They have to make it up somewhere and chances are it will be from hidden costs they pass on to you.
